Braves it Out
as the Americans Learn some Hard Lessons

John Howard will have a tough sell when he addresses the National Press
Club in the Great Hall of Parliament House today. The politics of the
war with Iraq certainly weren't supposed to work out like this.

They weren't supposed
to feature a feverish crisis in European-US relations, military action
without any political cover from the UN, increasing fury at President
Bush and the exceedingly modest number of political leaders who publicly
back him.
Howard will brave it out because he strongly believes in what the Bush
Administration is doing and because he now has little choice, anyway.
But it won't be easy - for him or anyone else - because we appear to be
going through one of the periodic convulsions that change how the world
operates. . . .
